Family Support Trust

Projects

Family Support Trust (FST) implements a wide range of projects aimed at preventing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), supporting survivors, and empowering communities across Zimbabwe. Each project reflects the organisation’s commitment to building a society free from violence and discrimination.

Through strong partnerships with local and international organisations, FST delivers impactful initiatives that combine clinical care, psychosocial support, education, and economic empowerment. These projects not only change individual lives but also strengthen families and communities to stand against all forms of abuse.

Current Projects

1. Strengthening Efforts and Improving Response to End All Forms of Gender-Based Violence in Zimbabwe

In partnership with Médecins du Monde (MDM), FST is implementing a transformative project focused on eliminating gender-based violence through community-based approaches. The initiative operates in FST clinics in Harare and Chitungwiza, enhancing prevention, early identification, and survivor support.

A unique feature of the project is the Art Against Gender-Based Violence programme, implemented with Kumbekumbe Arts Trust and Savanna Trust. Through art, theatre, and painting, students from four schools (two in Harare and two in Chitungwiza) are encouraged to express their views, raise awareness, and challenge violence within their communities.

This creative engagement helps young people understand the impact of gender-based violence while nurturing empathy, awareness, and advocacy skills among the next generation.

2. SRHR/HIV Knows No Borders

This regional initiative is implemented across six migration-affected countries in Southern Africa: Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

In Zimbabwe, FST focuses on Beitbridge, a key migration corridor between Zimbabwe and South Africa. The project improves access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services for young and vulnerable populations, including migrants and sex workers.

The project aims to:

Through this initiative, FST ensures that vulnerable groups—especially young women and girls—receive the care, education, and resources they need to protect their health and rights.

3. WAVE: Women Against Violence through Empowerment

Implemented in Mutare, the WAVE project empowers survivors of sexual and gender-based violence through livelihood training and economic empowerment.

In partnership with the Adult Rape Clinic and Nzeve Deaf Centre, the project equips women with practical skills such as:

Additionally, couples’ discussions are conducted to promote respect, communication, and equality within families. By addressing the economic and social roots of violence, the WAVE project helps women achieve independence and reduces vulnerability to future abuse.

This initiative demonstrates how empowerment and skills training can transform survivors into entrepreneurs, community leaders, and advocates for change.

4. Care2Share Project

The Care2Share project is transforming the lives of young people—especially young women—by equipping them with vocational and life skills that promote self-reliance and resilience.

Supported by Young Africa International, the project provides hands-on training in trades such as cosmetology and dressmaking, while integrating financial literacy, communication, and decision-making skills.

Through partnerships with local master craftsmen, Care2Share enables participants to gain employable skills, start small businesses, and become role models in their communities. The project’s goal is to break cycles of dependency and empower youth to lead independent, violence-free lives.
